As befitting a very grey day we spent today around Lago Grey. Lago Grey is a large lake on the western side of the park fed by the Grey glacier.

Samuels first iceberg |
The rain was heavier today although the wind had died down a little from yesterday. However we braved the conditions to go on two walks. The first was 6km around the end of the lake - taking a rocky spit/causeway out to a small island at the end of the lake surrounded by icebergs that had calved from the glacier at the other end of the lake and floated down to run aground on the "beach".

Having a great time! |
After lunch at the Lago Grey café we went on a second walk towards Mirador Ferrier, a lookout about 3km and 700 meters above the lake. Elise and Sam only went a short way up while Eric continued to about the 500 meter point, getting very wet and cold in the process.

Taken from the track to Mirador Ferrier. The morning walk was along the causeway and out to the island. |
It was a bit of a pity we didn't get to go to the base of the glacier or across the lake to have another look at the towers but with the weather the way it was (and the cost), we were happy with our choice of activity even if we got pretty damp.

When we got home the cat family was waiting to try and emotionally blackmail us to get into our heated cabana |
Wow, how amazing. The icebergs look so blue! You two don't look very impressed about being wet and cold. Katrina thinks Samuel should be wearing gloves etc.
ReplyDeleteGloves would have been really smart but it makes it difficult to take photos and pick up interesting things like ice.
ReplyDeleteSamuel has started a project about glaciers and we might look at what makes the ice so blue.
