Unlike other destinations on our cruise, Grand Cayman isn't primarily driven by tourism (though it runs a clear second). Rather it's key purpose is to serve as an Offshore Financial Centre. Elise came ashore with her key purpose being to engage in a financial transaction where we hand over cash in return for an appropriate trinket.
As we got off the tender it was clear where we were. The town was 33% financial institutions, 33% tourist shops (mainly jewellers) and 33% food outlets. There was the odd sight of a US school bus, but this was the only thing we didn't expect.
Elise had done her research in consultation with the cruises expert Shopping Director (probably one of the most important jobs on the ship after the Captain) and found what she wanted. The salesman was actually pretty good. Not too hard sell and he had the cheek to give me (Eric) a hard time for suggesting Elise pay using her credit card rather than mine. 😀
While we waited for her necklace to get a slight alteration we went for a wander where we saw one very brave local chicken...
Other than shopping we didn't do anything else of note ashore (Samuel didn't even leave the ship preferring to stay in Kids club all day). So we went back to the tender and enjoyed the trip back to the ship on what was by now a perfect afternoon.
