You may recall on the road to Denver we were admiring the cloudless skies in the Rocky Mountains and wondering about predicted snowfalls. Well the snow arrived as promised. In fact for the three or four days spent in Denver it snowed every day. And it wasn't just a little sprinkle.
It was white everywhere. For us (non skiing) Aussies, we aren't used to seeing piles of nice powdery snow everywhere and it was actually quite enjoyable - particularly as we decided that it was a good excuse to have a few easy days of r&r in our hotel. So we never went into the city. Not that we felt that we missed much though. Even though we were staying in suburbia and didn't venture far from the hotel, everything somehow looks magical under a dusting of snow.
Of course there was a need to go out in the car at least once. The job of warming up the car and clearing the snow and ice was not a trivial one and Eric's fingers became quite numb clearing a mountain of snow with our tiny and completely inadequate snow scraper. We did also get out and walk (or in Eric's case ran) a bit. Most of our treks were however, just short journeys across the road to the nearest shops for provisions.
There was a bit of concern on the morning we had to leave for the airport. The snow was heavier than ever and conditions bad enough that most schools had been closed for the day. We left ourselves plenty of time to drive across the city and return the car but it was still nervous going on the roads. Fortunately the snow ploughs had been out and made things just manageable though changing lanes could be a bit hairy.
At the airport there were quite a few delays and cancellations but the eventual getaway was not too far behind schedule. We actually got moved to an earlier flight that was delayed a few hours both due to the snow in Denver and storms at our destination in Houston and finally by the queue of planes for de-icing. It was certainly a relief finally getting off the ground. Warmer conditions ahead thankfully.
