(Warning: this isn't the most exciting post...)
Salt Lake City was a multi day stopover on our road trip, breaking the long drive between the beautiful forest parks and plains terrain of Wyoming and the canyonlands and desert in southern Utah and Arizona. The city itself is best known as the worldwide headquarters of the Mormon Church.
Temple Square is located right in the middle of the city located exactly as planned by Brigham Young when the church settlers arrived in the middle of the 19th Century. The church grounds including a large conference centre, visitors centre, museum and other buildings occupy several blocks of immaculately manicured property. We arrived just before a big conference (we met some conference goers breakfasting at out hotel) which might explain the large number of weddings that were going on when we arrived.
Other than the Church centre, the city isn't that exciting but it is a lot cleaner and neater than most other US cities we have visited. Salt Lake City itself is quite small but the associated metropolitan area does extend many miles north and south taking in a number of large towns/satellite suburbs. Samuel was keen to ride the tram service which was free in the inner parts of the city.
Except for taking in a Utah Jazz game (see separate post) we didn't really do much else. A bit of shopping, taking it easy in our hotel, getting a haircut. While there's plenty of nice scenery to see around Utah, Salt Lake City lacks the many entertainments on offer at other US cities. But after a hectic few weeks this was just what we needed.
