Samuel is getting very keen on his orienteering. So when we saw an ad for a city sprint orienteering weekend in Vienna (4 hours by train from Munich) in the middle of our stay in Wolfratshausen, Samuel and Eric jumped at the chance. It also gave Elise a chance to relax for a few days without her boys around.
We jumped on an early morning train on Friday which got us to Vienna at lunchtime so we had plenty of time to check in to our hotel before the first race on Friday evening at Donau City on the banks of the Danube. Donau City was a multi-level maze of odd shaped skyscrapers mixed with shops and gardens and it made a great area for a kind of post apocalyptic/hunger games style sprint. The start was right next to a ropes course and as we arrived a bit early we had to give it a go.
Eric had a successful evening picking the right routes and winning his class. Poor Samuel found it a bit too hard (there was no very young children's class so he was competing against kids 4 years older than him on really hard courses). Eventually he found his way back just as it got dark and everything was being packed away. Thankfully it didn't dent his enthusiasm but we did get home very late - it was a long day!.
