Welcome to Budapest, like Riga and Tallinn another great walking city with some amazing buildings and fabulous views. On our first full day we decided to take in some of the sights by crossing the Danube to visit the Buda side of town - thanks for the Szigetvari special itinerary Chris!
Before crossing to Buda we walked along the waterfront checking out the many companies offering Danube cruises (by day or by night). In the end we didn't take a cruise. We kind of decided we could see enough from the shore.
After walking across the bridge just below the Gellert Hill (we left climbing the hill for another day) we climbed up to the Buda Castle and wandered around the walls taking in the spectacular views across the river from the front of the National Gallery.
We walked along the heights heading north past the Fisherman's Bastion (odd name!) and Savoy Terrace. By this stage we were crossing paths with lots of tourists and all the best views were crowded with persons of all nationalities.
As we walked further north, the magnificent Hungarian Parliament Building dominated the view across the river. It's very gothic and very spectacular.
By this stage Elise was doing it tough (some lurgy or other), so it was Sam's chance to tick off another metro system (he's become a bit of a trainspotter) by taking the subway home under the river.
